ELDERS wool broker and technical coordinator Samantha Wan has been helping us throughout our work on our Archibull Prize submission. A finalist in the 2019 National Council Of Wool Selling Brokers Young Broker Award, Samantha grew up in Blacktown. Despite her parents’ wishes for her to become a lawyer or doctor, Samantha received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Sydney and completed her industry training/work experience with the Australian Wool Testing Authority. She then moved to Melbourne to begin as a wool technical support officer in July 2012 within the ELDERS traineeship program. In May, we gathered questions we had for Samantha and participated in a video call with her. She answered all of our inquiries and discussed with us the importance of acknowledging climate change as a big issue in the wool industry, more specifically educating us on biosecurity and the sustainability circle. Then, in August, she came to visit us here at Burwood Girls and showed us examples of the many things wool can be used for. This included woollen shoes, bathroom supplies and a jacket. She taught us in more depth about plastic in the sheep’s food and how that affects the outcome of the wool, as well as careers in wool.
